A ‘Day at the Races’

The second Women’s Guild “Day at the Races” provided thoroughbred fun for Women’s Guild members and their families. The festivities began at the home of Shelley and Dr. Martin Cooper, where attendees gathered to fortify themselves with coffee and assorted goodies before hopping aboard a luxury coach bound for Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. At the track, the group enjoyed a private paddock tour, a delicious lunch — and much betting on the horses. A Santa Anita official handicapper was on hand to advise on the best bets, but many members, husbands, and significant others were seasoned enough to forgo such guidance. Many successful wagers were placed. The day even featured a special race named for Women’s Guild, and members had their pictures taken with the winning horse and jockey. Linda Zale helped Shelley Cooper organize the day.
